🤍 Your Newborn Baby Photoshoot – How to Prepare
A gentle, practical guide to help you feel calm and ready for your session.
✨ First things first…
Thank you so much for booking your newborn session with Y7 Photography. It truly means the world to me to be invited into this sacred, beautiful time of your life.
If you’re reading this, you might already be in the fourth trimester – that surreal period when your baby is finally in your arms, yet still feels like part of you – or perhaps you’re just a few days away from meeting them. Either way, I want to say: I see you, and I get it.
I remember these days myself – how everything changed overnight, how deep the love was, and how unready I felt to be photographed. But that’s exactly why I do what I do. You don’t need to be “ready” – just be present. Trust me to gently guide you and capture your family’s story with care, honesty, and beauty.
And don’t worry – you don’t have to prepare everything at once.
✨ Just keep this guide close and, whenever you get a minute, take small steps to get ready. This is about ease, not pressure.
🏠 Around the Home
We’ll shoot in natural light and choose cosy, meaningful spaces. A little light prep goes a long way to keep the focus on connection, not clutter.
Here are some ideas to slowly think about as the day approaches:
🪟 Let the light in
-
Rooms with East or South-facing windows are great in the morning
-
Spaces like your bedroom, baby’s nursery, or any area you love spending time in
🧺 Soften the scene
-
Pop everyday bits like bottles, breast pumps, laundry, or papers into drawers or baskets
-
Feel free to keep things real, but a little tidy-up helps the visuals stay clean
💐 Optional little touches
-
A small vase of fresh flowers in the background is lovely if you feel up for it
-
Choose anything that matches your home’s style – white, blush, eucalyptus, etc.
🌡️ Keep the space warm
-
Your baby may be lightly clothed or swaddled – warmth helps them stay cosy and settled
🔄 Let me adjust the space
-
I might gently move light furniture or objects to find the best angles and light – it’s all part of the magic ✨
👗 What to Wear
No need for matching outfits or shopping sprees—just simple pieces that feel like you and allow your baby to shine.
👩🍼 For Mama
-
🤍 Soft, neutral colours – white, beige, grey, muted pastels
-
🌿 Tones that gently match your home décor
-
👘 A long robe (cotton, silk, linen) or floaty dress that feels relaxed and beautiful
-
👚 Camisoles or knits for optional skin-to-skin images
-
💄 Light makeup, moisturised lips, brows, a little blush if you’d like
-
💇 Natural hair loosely styled or gently pinned to show your face
-
💅 Nails clean and bare or in soft neutral tones
💬 You’re welcome to send me inspiration photos or outfit ideas anytime before the shoot – I’ll do my best to include your vision, but I always prioritise flow, ease, and authenticity.
🤍 Feeding Moments
Breastfeeding or bottle-feeding can be incredibly moving to capture.
🍼 If you’d like these moments included, I’ll document them gently and respectfully.
If you’d prefer to keep them private, just let me know – your comfort always comes first.
🧍♂️ For Papa / Partner
-
👕 Neutral-coloured t-shirts, linen shirts, or soft button-downs
-
👖 Relaxed trousers, jeans, or chinos (no logos or bright colours)
-
🧥 Soft layers like cardigans or overshirts add texture
-
👣 Bare feet and rolled sleeves keep things feeling at home
-
👐 Clean hands and tidy nails are great for close-ups
-
⌚ Minimal jewellery unless it’s meaningful
✨ Try to coordinate colours with mama and baby – soft, earthy tones always work beautifully.
👶 For Baby
-
👶 A plain white or neutral onesie
-
🧺 A couple of favourite swaddles or heirloom blankets
-
🤍 Plain nappy or nude-toned if you’d like skin-on-skin moments
-
🧸 A special toy, knit hat, or keepsake if you’d love it captured
-
🧼 Keep it simple – your baby is perfect as they are
👨👩👧👦 For Grandparents, Nannies, or Others Present
-
🧥 If others may be in the background or included, it’s helpful if they also wear soft, neutral tones
-
❌ Please avoid bright colours or bold prints – they can distract from the emotional focus of the images
-
👚 Simple and relaxed always photographs best
🐶 For Pets
I absolutely love including pets in sessions – they’re family, too!
But I’ll admit, they sometimes surprise me 😄
🐾 Please let me know in advance if you have pets who might join us, and share anything I should know about their behaviour (e.g. shy, jumpy, protective).
If they’re calm and curious, we’ll ease them into the session. If they’re not in the mood, no worries – we let them do their thing without pressure.
🕊️ On the Day: What to Expect
🕚 I usually arrive at 11am, unless we’ve arranged otherwise.
We’ll begin by walking through your home together to choose the best spots. I usually start with baby alone, then gently include you, your partner, pets, and anyone else you wish.
✨ The session is baby-led and relaxed – with breaks for cuddling, feeding, changing, or anything you or your little one needs.
💬 Please speak up at any point:
-
If you need a break
-
If something feels off
-
Or if you have a brilliant idea – this is a collaboration.
I might get into creative flow and suggest ideas on the spot, but your intuition and your comfort matter deeply. We’re in this together.
📲 Stay in Touch
If you have questions or want to share ideas before the shoot, you can WhatsApp or email me anytime.
This isn’t just a session – it’s the beginning of a story we’ll tell together through honest, meaningful images.
Let’s make it beautiful – and real.
With warmth,
Yulia Hutton
